O2 today announced that Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 3G will go on general sale from 8.02am on Friday 11 July in O2, Apple and Carphone Warehouse retail stores*. To ensure fairness, O2 will sell the device on a strictly first come, first served basis to both new and upgrading customers in all retail outlets.

Well it has been a totally frustrating morning for anyone who has been trying to pre-order the O2 iPhone 3G, the site has been down since just after 8am this morning and now when you eventually do get in a position to place the order, all that is available is the 8 Gig version. This cannot be right, has demand been that great that they have sold out already, has anyone actually managed to place an order?

As mentioned in our earlier post, O2 decided to accept pre-orders for the iPhone 3G this morning starting at 8am. Unfortunately it seems that the online ordering has been anything but a success, we have received a lot of comments that the system is breaking down and sure enough when we checked it just now it was offline.

Well some of the rumours were right, most were wrong, I received an email from O2 this morning and from 8am 7th July you can pre-order the iPhone 3G. You do not need to go into any store as they will deliver free of charge to your home on July 11th. You can order it from this link.

A PC Advisor reader has revealed the secret plans for the UK launch of the Apple 3G iPhone. These include VIP passes for people who pre-order the phone online.

Callum McCormick claims that a member of staff at his local Carphone Warehouse showed him details on his computer that spelt out times and dates of the second-generation touchscreen smartphone launch on July 11. The iPhone will also be available at UK carrier O2’s stores.

O2 staff have been freely telling customers over the last few weeks that from the 4th July you could come to any O2 store and pre-order the iPhone 3G, sign up for service, go through the credit checks and even arrange porting your number in advance so everything will be ready to go on Friday the 11th. Well it is total rubbish as apparently after speaking to the manager in a local O2 store today they have changed their mind and now will not offer any pre-orders on the iPhone 3G.

O2 have just sent out an email which basically tells us nothing really new, but we said we would keep you up to date so here goes. As promised, we are writing to you to keep you updated on the next steps to getting iPhone 3G.
iPhone 3G goes on sale on the high street on 11 July 2008.
We will be writing to you again before the 11th with details about how you could place your order. However, we do expect demand for iPhone 3G to be very high so orders will be processed on a first come, first served basis so that we can be fair to all customers. Orders will be limited to one iPhone 3G per customer.

Just returned from a visit to my local O2 store and had a long chat to the manager of the store. He told me that all O2 stores will be taking orders for the the iPhone 3G from 4th July. This is a fastrack order system so you will actually be able to sign up for service from 4th July select your contract go through the credit checks etc and organise any number porting from this date. On the 11th July you can avoid any in store queues and guarantee that you will get an iPhone 3G on launch day. If you are porting your number this can also be arranged so that it is ported on the 11th when you get your new iPhone 3G so no hanging around. I will be doing this on the 4th July so I will keep you all informed how it goes.
