Having just arrived in the South of France it got me thinking how this trip relied on Mobile Technology and how much it has benefited us compared with making a trip some 10 years ago. First off the Gete (French Farmhouse) was all sourced through the Internet, the various on route hotels again booked online along with the tickets to get through the Channel Tunnel. These details were all emailed and stored on my iPhone for a paperless system.

Apple may already be laying the groundwork for several important updates in the next major iteration of iPhone firmware, according to multiple sources. One notes that in exploring the Localizable.strings entry under English.lproj in the current iPhone WebKit framework, there are entries for several commands the firmware does not currently support, including cutting, copying and pasting. Apple has expressed interest in adding the feature, but has not set a timeframe.

Vodafone UK and Telmap, the world leader in advanced mobile mapping and navigation solutions, have teamed up with Multimap, the UK’s specialist online mapping service, to introduce Find & Go. The launch of Find & Go conveniently converges PC location based services with the mobile phone.  Vodafone customers can for the first time search for a destination on their PCs on the Multimap website and send the search result to their mobile phone free of charge.

Having launched the new iPhone and with the new SDK on the way Apple have added in a couple of clauses to curb what developers can do with the GPS built into the new iPhone.  According to Electronista the agreement states that the GPS cannot be used for real time navigation applications.

Looks like Apple are planning to keep the navigation pie all to themselves.  TomTom are known to be working on an application, so the question is do they have an exclusive agreement?

So, what’s the use of GPS if you can’t get real time data out of it?  I think we’ll see the most innovative GPS aware applications coming from areas outside of navigation.  Some sort of "what are people listening to near me" type of app is going to be a good bet!

As expected the 3G iPhone was announced today at WWDC by Steve Jobs, it will be available in 22 countries from July 11th and will have the following features.

3G but no further details as of yet.

AGPS in built and can be used in combination with cell tower triangulation and Wi-Fi to help locate an iPhone. Finally real-time positioning in Google Maps.

It’s easy to take for granted the 3G iPhone’s launch at this point. After all, Steve said it was "coming later this year," as did a number of prominent mobile executives. And then there’s been the barrage of carrier announcements, many in international markets that use UMTS and have zero support for the iPhone as we know it today. But the fact of the matter is we’ve had very little to go on by way of material evidence — until now.

For Apple watchers, next week will — if rumors are correct — bring a host of reasons to rejoice.

The sold-out Worldwide Developer Conference, or WWDC, happening June 9-13 in San Francisco, is widely expected to be the venue at which company CEO Steve Jobs unveils a second-generation iPhone, a panoply of new applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch, a new MacBook Pro and the next upgrade to OS X, codenamed "Snow Leopard."

iPhone killer ???

Over the next 2 weeks Mobility Today will be reviewing the HTC Touch Diamond and answering all of your questions you might have on this device. The unit they will be reviewing is a final production European release Diamond and it’s the first time anyone has managed to get hold of a unit that’s a released retail version. Depending which iPhone rumor you believe, the 3G version of iPhone has either been delayed or already landed on U.S. shores and is on its way to being announced at Apple’s WWDC in San Francisco next month. The interest in the 3G version of the iPhone has been building since AT&T executives “accidentally” talked about it at various events.
