Technology tracking firm NPD on Monday said iPhones are the mobile handset of choice for US consumers. The report comes on the heels of studies showing that iPhones have taken the place of BlackBerry handsets as second-best selling mobile telephones worldwide and are half as likely to break down as the Research-In-Motion devices. Nokia remains the mobile phone market leader worldwide.

HTC Corporation, a global leader in mobile phone innovation and design, today launched two new devices in the Middle East - the HTC Touch 3G and HTC Touch HD. Highlighting GITEX 2008, the Middle East’s largest technology conference, the new phones, along with many other HTC handsets will be demonstrated within HTC’s booth located at F9-1B in Sheikh Rashid Hall. We have talked many times on the blog and podcast about the problems with the iPhone 3G no longer charging through the old Firewire charging pins and the trouble this caused with iPod docks but most commonly with car integration kits like the Dension range. In another busy day of Windows Mobile handset announcement HTC have announced another handset this time the HTC Touch 3G. Roughly Drafted Magazine claim to have been told by an inside source the reasons behind the much publicised problems of the iPhone 3G dropping calls which we discussed on our first podcast. The iPhone 2.0.2 update “fixed power control on the mobile,” the source told RoughlyDrafted. UMTS, the technology used to deliver the 3G network, refers to phones and other client devices as “UE” for user equipment, and the base transceiver station towers as “Node B.” Read on for the full explanation but makes sure you have your tech head on first.

Orange today announced that the first laptop in its ‘connected’ range will be available from tomorrow, 16th August. Available from Orange shops, consumers will be able to purchase a package consisting of Orange’s ‘Internet Everywhere’ mobile broadband service and dongle and an Asus laptop for just £25 a month. The Asus laptop offers the ultimate portable experience with its 8.9" compact design and weighing just 0.99kg allowing consumers to walk out of store and connect to the Internet.

IBM’s Lotus Domino Web Access software, also known as IBM Lotus iNotes, will bring your Lotus e-mail, calendar and contact details to the Apple iPhone 3G. IBM says the Lotus functionality is planned for delivery to the iPhone sometime in 2008, although no official announcement has yet been made and the company is stating that Lotus iNotes on the iPhone represents "current IBM plans and directions, which are subject to change."

So carrying on from Part 1 having now arrived in France with thanks to TomTom and the iPhone I really wanted to be able to carry on posting the latest news while I was away. I am visiting France for a family holiday but would really like to be able to stay online while I am away, I have been looking around for the best way to get 3G access but it seems it is going to be a very expensive thing to do. I have a 3 USB Modem and they have no roaming agreements so would charge £3.00 per MB for data which is very very expensive. Does anyone have any cheaper solutions or is it possible to get a pre-pay mobile broadband set up while I am in France, my information is that you can only get mobile broadband in France by signing a 12 month minimum contract which doesn’t help. If anyone has any solutions or suggestions please leave a comment. Thanks

The iPhone Dev Team has just posted a video of what it claims is “the world’s first jailbroken iPhone 3G running our own software.” While true that there have already been jailbreaks for the iPhone 2.0 firmware, this latest “pwnage” represents a big step forward toward a complete solution for users wanting to use the latest iPhone without being required to join with a particular carrier, and run non-Apple-sanctioned applications on the device.
